Common Gear Problems and How to Fix Them Problem: Chain Skips Gears or Won’t Shift Applies to: Derailleur systems Check and fine-tune cable tension using the barrel adjuster on the derailleur or shifter Make small quarter-turns, then test shifting again If tension isn’t the issue, clean the derailleur and check for a bent hanger or misaligned limit screws If the chain jumps multiple cogs at once or doesn’t respond to the shifter, the cable might be frayed or stuck in the housing Problem: Gears Feel Delayed or Out of Sync Applies to: Internal hub gears Shift to the adjustment gear (gear 2 for 3-speed, gear 4 for 7/8-speed) Look at the yellow alignment marks on the gear hub If they don’t line up, turn the barrel adjuster near the shifter until they do Important: Don’t adjust hub gears while applying pedal pressure — ease off while shifting Problem: Chain Falls Off the Front or Rear Applies to: Derailleur systems Adjust the limit screws on the derailleur H-screw controls movement to the smallest cog L-screw controls movement to the largest cog Check that the front derailleur is aligned and not too far from the chainrings Problem: Gears Make Clicking or Grinding Sounds Applies to: All gear systems Clean and lubricate the drivetrain (chain, cassette, derailleur) Check cable tension and replace worn cables or housing For hub gears, inspect for cable tension issues or internal wear If noise persists after cleaning and adjusting, the chain or cassette may be worn and need replacement 3
